Email Fraud Protection
Most reputable merchant sites use encryption technologies to protect your private data, but you can take action yourself to stay ahead of fraudulent activity, too.
Be informed when it comes to email fraud:
- View (and review) any email request for financial information or other personal data with suspicion. When in doubt, don’t respond or click on any links within the message.
- Know the source. Contact the business that allegedly sent the email to verify if it is genuine.
- Become a consumer watchdog: Forward suspicious emails to the Better Business Bureau at email@example.com, and call your issuing financial institution immediately
- Report fraud: Forward any emails claiming to be from Visa or your issuer that request your personal account information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
What to watch for
A few common giveaways are emails that:
- Request personal information, such as bank account number, account password, credit or debit card number, PIN number, mother’s maiden name, or Social Security number. Visa will never ask you for this information by email.
- Do not address you by name or acknowledge the company with which you do business, such as by referencing a partial account number.
- Include a sense of urgency, such as an alert that your account will be shut down unless you reconfirm your financial information.
- Warn that you’ve already been a victim of fraud.
- Contain spelling or grammatical errors.
