Kim Wagner, Visa Research scientist.

Biography

Dr. Kim Wagner joined Visa Research as a Senior Director in April 2019. Kim received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University in 1994. Prior to joining Visa Research, Kim was a Director at Visa, an experienced security architect specializing in cryptography, security and biometrics subject matter, leading the Applied Authentication Lab, designing authentications solutions that give user experiences while preserving customers’ privacy. Before working at Visa, he was a Senior Manager at beTRUSTed/PricewaterhouseCoopers, building public key infrastructure, architecture and design of digital certificate solutions for financial industry and health care industry. He was also a Senior Security Architect at Mondex International, leading architecture, design and project management for development of smartcard solutions.

Kim is involved in several committees and group, including representing Visa on the EMV Security Working Group in the Cryptographic Review Forum, and he chairs the ISO subcommittee on Security in Financial Services–which, among other things, defines how PINs should be protected across the world, and how cryptographic keys should be managed in the financial services industry.

As a member of the Security team, his research interests are in biometrics, quantum computing and cryptography, in particular privacy preserving biometrics, multi-party computation and quantum computation–specifically, designing algorithms that utilize the vast potential of quantum mechanical phenomena and tracking and measuring progress towards building a scalable quantum computer. He is the inventor of nearly 50 U.S., WO and European patents, and has published several papers in international conferences and journals, including Atlas, RAISE, Trane Comfort Specialist (TCS), and others.
