Inspiring new beginnings

Visa is proud to support the creative spirit and boundless energy of our Ideas Happen winners. We believe that building a better community starts by helping people build their dreams. Our twelve outstanding innovators each received $25,000 from Visa to help them launch their ideas. We can hardly wait to see what they’ll do next.

Self Expression

Analytical Youth/Self-Expression

It seems that more than ever, a disproportionately large percentage of teens and young adults so easily buy into all the superficial notions that society imposes. Advertising and media play huge roles in the way kids view the world and the way they think the world views them. It’s unfortunate that so many impressionable young people unknowingly allow others to think for them, rather than thinking for themselves.

I think it would be fabulous to have Critical Thinking classes as part of the core curriculum in all junior and senior high schools; however, that would be an initiative of insurmountable mammoth proportions. So my idea is to do a series of television shows that teaches young people how to critically and constructively question and analyze things that are presented to them on a daily basis that would otherwise just be accepted and unquestioned.

A few examples for shows could focus on designer clothing or the logo on a shirt, or demystifying the glamour of celebrity by going behind scenes of a photo shoot, TV show, or film. It would be very interesting to breakdown the idea that wearing a shirt, pair of shoes, or pants, the person wearing the brand name item is supposedly perceived within certain status; however, what they are really doing is paying a lot of money to make themselves a walking billboard for the company who is selling the product or brand, and in the end helping to make that company a lot of money.
