Iquitos, Peru is the largest city in the world you cant drive to. Rising amidst the rubber boom during colonial times, infrastructure collapsed when the rubber tree was exported. The world no longer relied on Iquitos. Now this beautiful area in the Amazon holds on to the shamanic practices and indigenous medicine from the rainforest. However, the collapsed economy has left a scar of poverty and illness throughout the city. As an RN, my idea is to tap into an existing network of doctors and volunteers who are working to alleviate many of the health problems in Iquitos. $25,000 would set up a clinic in Belen the poorest part of Iquitos where HIV rates are increasing. It would run the clinic for more than a year and empower local people as health advocates. While there, I will shoot footage and edit it into an educational documentary about Iquitos. This will serve to educate people and bring in more volunteers. After I leave, the clinic will be overseen by a local doctor and volunteers who travel from around the world to learn about the rainforest. Focusing on education and prevention, this clinic will bring long-term relief to a suffering region. Can you make it happen?
