Visa Statement Regarding Sponsorship of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games
As an Olympic sponsor, we believe in the spirit of the Games and their unique ability to engage the world in a way that is positive and inspirational. The Olympic Games provide the world with an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the athletes that have worked so hard to attend the Games.
Visa is aware that groups and individuals are reaching out to Olympic sponsors to voice their concerns regarding human rights. Visa expects that Principle 6 of the Olympic charter that opposes any form of discrimination will be thoroughly applied during the games. Visa believes the Games should be open to all, free of discrimination, and that applies to spectators, officials, media and of course, athletes.
As a company and as a brand, Visa stands for inclusivity and celebrates diversity. We are a strong supporter of the LGBT community. Visa does not condone discrimination of any kind in our policies and business practices.
Advancing the Olympic Spirit
Sport unites people, communities and nations. It enriches people's lives and creates economic development opportunities. In today's world, where brand and trust mean so much, the Olympic Games reflect those equities found at Visa - worldwide acceptance, reliability, versatility and leadership. Sponsoring the Olympic Games makes good business sense for Visa and our clients.
Sponsorships, like Visa's commitment and support of the Olympic Movement, National Olympic Committees and national teams, have helped ensure the continued success of the Olympic Games. Visa has provided direct economic support to stage the Games themselves and provided untold direct support to thousands of Olympic athletes through support of National Olympic Committees.
Additionally, Visa supports Olympic teams and individual athletes through its global Team Visa program, providing financial support, life-skills training and valuable marketing exposure in pursuit of their Olympic dreams. Visa has created a number of programs around the world to help sustain Olympic teams and athletes as they embark on their journey to the Games.
Building Business, Uniting the World
Since 1986, Visa has been a proud Worldwide Sponsor of the Olympic Games and will be the exclusive payment services sponsor and the only card accepted at the Olympic Games through 2020, including the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In 2011, Visa celebrated its 25th anniversary as a sponsor of the Olympic Games and member of the IOC's TOP (The Olympic Partner) Program.
Financial institutions and merchants benefit greatly from Visa's Olympic Games marketing platform, which they use to connect with accountholders on a level that goes beyond commerce. For the London 2012 Olympic Games, Visa worked with approximately 1,000 financial institution clients and retail merchant partners to build and strengthen their business with Visa and create excitement among their customers through participation in Visa's Olympic Games driven marketing programs. Visa was also the first worldwide Olympic partner to mount marketing destination programs linked to the cities hosting the Olympic Games.
Payments at the Games
At every Olympic Games, Visa implements and manages the payment system infrastructure and network throughout all Olympic Games venues and official Olympic Games retail merchandise locations. For the London 2012 Olympic Games, there were approximately 3,200 contactless enabled POS devices in merchant locations in Olympic venues that included Olympic Park, North Greenwich Arena, Excel, Wembley Stadium and Wimbledon. As a service to its accountholders at the Olympic Games, Visa provided multilingual emergency services and general assistance on-site at Visa Customer Service Booths at various Olympic Games venues.
