How you can decline to have your data used for anonymous marketing reports

In order to process your Visa transactions and deliver the security protections and other benefits you expect from Visa, we require four key pieces of information when a Visa card is used: the account number associated with the card; the location of the transaction; the time and date of the transaction; and the amount of the transaction.

The primary use of this data is to ensure Visa delivers on its promise of a secure, convenient and reliable payments experience.
Another way we may use this data is collectively for the creation of anonymous marketing reports that we provide to other companies. Anonymous reports compile data from a large cardholder population and contain no account level or other identifiable data. These companies use these anonymized reports to improve their marketing efforts. For example, a report may show that one ZIP code tends to spend more at auto parts stores than compared to other ZIP codes. The data used in these reports is combined and processed so that the reports cannot identify you or your specific Visa purchases.

Limitations of this opt-out

If you choose to exercise this anonymous marketing opt-out, it will only impact our use of data from your registered card number in Visa's anonymous marketing initiatives.

This opt-out will not stop our use of data in other aspects of Visa's business, such as:

  • Processing transactions
  • Risk and fraud prevention
  • Maintenance and development of our systems
  • Reporting on the state of our business
  • Designing and operating our other products and services
  • Providing information to card issuers, acquiring institutions and other Visa system stakeholders such as merchants and co-branded card partners

In addition, this opt-out will also not affect any of your preferences or choices provided to you by the financial institution issuing your card. Please contact your financial institution if you want to change your preferences or choices regarding their use of your information.

How to maintain your opt-out choice

Because card numbers are not unique to you and may be reused, your opt-out will be honored for period of five years. After the five year period, if your card number has not changed, you will need to resubmit your card number. If your card account number changes for any reason and you want to have your new card number registered for this marketing opt-out, you will need to contact us at the phone number above to place the new card number on our opt-out list.
