Flood Relief in the Philippines
In July 2011, intense rains in the Philippines island of Mindanao caused flooding and flash floods in nine provinces, affecting more than 120,000 families and damaging over 7,000 acres of crops. ACF International, a leading humanitarian organization in the fight against hunger and a member of CaLP, turned to Visa to assist with the delivery of an electronic voucher program using Visa prepaid cards. Beneficiaries used Visa prepaid cards to purchase a selection of food and non-food items from local merchants who are eligible for the program. This pilot effort, which rolled out in only eight days, was designed to accelerate economic recovery in the impacted areas instead of displacing market activity with food donations.
