Shared Responsibility

Maintaining security for consumers is a shared responsibility. To meet the evolving threat of today's international criminals, every entity with a stake in electronic payments must be fully committed to protecting their customers' financial information.

As an industry leader, Visa works to promote industry engagement and accountability around security.  We work hand in hand with the broader payments community, from cardholders to merchants, financial institutions to service providers, regulators to law enforcement. Our collective success in maintaining the trust and confidence of consumers comes from this ability to work together, share information and coordinate our defenses.

Visa works to educate consumers about the nature of security threats and how to protect themselves, including through Visa Fraud News. Further, Visa supports a comprehensive cardholder information security program that includes extensive education, support and resources for merchants and the industry to meet standards and increase data security.

Our Partnerships
  • Visa is a founding member of the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council, an open global forum responsible for the development, management, education and awareness of the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards, including the PCI Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) and PIN Transaction Security (PTS) requirements.
  • For the cardholder who suspects he or she may already be a victim of identity theft, Visa works with  Call for Action  to provide consumers free and confidential assistance through a toll-free hot line.
  • Visa partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce  to develop the Internet Security Essentials for Business 2.0, a resource addressing common online risks small businesses face and practical strategies to protect sensitive data.
  • We launched a campaign with the Better Business Bureau to educate consumers on how to identify phishing scams, avoid becoming a victim and report suspicious e-mails.
  • We joined the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the National Consumers League and other industry organizations to sponsor an educational campaign about check, money order and wire transfer scams.
